Few motion pictures are more universally beloved than The Wizard of Oz, which opened nationwide on August 25, 1939. Growing up, this was my absolute favorite movie, and I used to wait with great anticipation for the opportunity to click my heels together three times to join Dorothy in her journey to The Emerald City when NBC would so kindly show their annual viewing of “The Wizard of Oz”. As a result, when Mr. Topel and Mr. Czinder shared with me that they had selected “Wizard of Oz” for this year’s musical, I nearly jumped out of my skin!
However, being a fan of Wizard of Oz trivia, did you know that…
1. The iconic song “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” was almost cut from the movie
2. It took over 3,200 costumes to bring this story to life
3. Toto, the dog, was paid $125 a week, which was more than the Munchkins made per week
4. The Cowardly Lion’s costume weighed over 100 pounds
5. In Frank Baum’s book, Dorothy’s slippers are silver, but the decision was made during filming to change the shoe color to ruby red due to their visual vibrancy during the film’s Technicolor transformation
6. The movie was completely filmed in ten months, and initial movie critics gave the movie extremely poor reviews
However, more importantly, this story does an amazing job at presenting the lesson that God always gives us exactly what we need when we need it. Sometimes, these answers come through unexpected avenues, and, sometimes, we learn that we just didn’t realize that we already possessed the desired gift.
As a result, we are so excited to bring this classic story to life, and we look forward to traveling down the yellow brick road with each of you as St. Matthew Lutheran School proudly presents “The Wizard of Oz”. Please plan on joining us on May 5th and 6th as Dorothy and her friends lead us on an “OZ”-mazing journey to the Emerald City in search of brains, a heart, courage, and the desire to return a loving home.
During your travels, please plan to stop by the “Emerald City Café” to enjoy tasty delicacies such as Tin Man heart pizza, Dorothy’s Ruby Slipper cookies, Wicked Witch cupcakes, Lollipop Kids’ lollipops, and various other treats.
In addition, we will sell Yellow Brick Treasure Bars! Each night, 20 pieces of various forms of treasure will be hidden inside the chocolate bar wrappers, so come and see if you can locate an exciting prize - including a pool party for your class at Mrs. Palka’s house!
Due to our recent Art teacher vacancy, we will not host a formal Art Show this year. However, our spring Book Fair will be open on Friday and Saturday evenings.
So... it’s time to click your heels together three times and buy your tickets now! Order forms will come home today, but to assist in making this presale ticket purchase easier, Mrs. Yeskie will be outside the blue awning each morning with additional forms.
